At Perrystone Estates, our Ryeland flock is thriving and we’re delighted to share a seasonal update with you.
Last year’s spring lambs are weighing exceptionally well, a testament to both careful management and the hardy nature of this wonderful native breed. Despite the challenges many flocks faced during the long, dry summer, our sheep had plenty of space to graze and coped remarkably well. Ryelands are known for their resilience, and once again they have proven why they are such a valued part of the estate.

Even more exciting is the promise of this year’s lamb crop. Our recent pregnancy scanning brought excellent results, with a higher percentage of in-lamb ewes compared to many others. We are expecting plenty of lambs to arrive throughout March and April, and preparations are already underway for a busy lambing season

Using an ultrasound scanner, we are able to see how many lambs each ewe is carrying and assess their size. This also helps us determine whether a ewe is likely to lamb early or later in the season, and identify those carrying more than two lambs who may need a little extra attention. Each ewe is marked with a coloured dot: Blue for one lamb, no colour for twins, orange for triplets or more, and red for empty.
